Top Ten Tuesday: My Top Ten Books of 2015

toptentuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly event, hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

This is my first Top Ten Tuesday and it is freebie week! So, I have decided to tell you about the top ten books I have read this year. These are subject to change at the end of the year, but for now, in no particular order:

Uprooted by Naomi Novik – I have praised this book many times before, but I just can’t tell you how much I adored this book. If you enjoy fast pasted fantasy novels with strong female leads, this one is for you. Even if that isn’t your thing, you should still pick it up and enjoy the rich folklore and fresh take on magic.

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline – We read this is our monthly book club, and so far it is the only book we have chosen that knocked me our of the park. Sure, it has it’s issues, as most debut novels do, but they weren’t bad enough to take away from the story. Check this out if you are a gamer or love 80s pop culture!

Maplecroft by Cherie Priest – This jewel tells the story of Lizzie Borden, the woman accused of murdering her father and stepmother with an ax in 1893. However, in this Lovecraft inspired telling, Lizzie is not a mad woman out for revenge. Quite the contrary. She and her sister spent every waking moment protecting the city from strange occurrences. This book was extremely well written and told a chilling story. I loved it, and if you have any interest in the Cthulhu mythos, I would highly recommend it.

Cold Days by Jim Butcher – I am addicted to The Dresden Files. they are quite possibly the best Urban Fantasy series I have ever read. That said, the series has it’s highs and lows. Cold Days is a high! Butcher always delivers when he writes about fairies, this book is no exception. Complete with Queen Mab, a strange island, and wizards, Cold Days is a must read! If you haven’t read any of the other books in the series, you should start at the beginning and work your way forward. It is well worth your time.

Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder – This one was a shock. It got rave reviews on Goodreads and popped up on Scribd, so I made a quick decision to read it. Boy, am I glad I did. Poison Study is a story of political intrigue and magic, with a side of (well done) romance. I loved it so much I devoured the rest of the series in a week. Sadly, they only go down from here. I suggest this to anyone who enjoyed Uprooted or The Grisha Trilogy.

Soulless by Gail Carriger – Steampunk and Urban Fantasy all rolled up in one book? Yes, please! Soulless was a comedy of manners and monsters that I just couldn’t put down. The series gets more and more strange as you go along, but I still loved it. Now if the set came in hardback!

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas – I was skeptical of a Beauty and the Beast retelling. Most of them just aren’t unique enough to keep my attention. This one was. And not only that, it’s about fairies. If you haven’t noticed, I love books about fae. Most of the ones I pick up are passable at best, but this one was a star! I am already counting the days for the sequel’s release.

Cinder by Marissa Meyer – Goodreads would not stop recommending this book to me. Every time I finished a book it would tell to read Cinder. So I finally caved, and loved every minute of it! I had no idea the series would develop into this fantastic space opera full of all my favorite fairy tale characters. It sounds silly on the front end, but it is very well done! If you like space operas and Cinderella, I suggest to read this one ASAP!

Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor – This is the final installment in the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy. I would have put the first book here, but I read it last year. Oh well. This series is quite possibly the most unique setting I have ever read. I was blown away with the detail that went into her world building. It was stunning. I would compare it to another series to help with recommendations, but it really is unlike anything else I have read.

Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas – I could put Throne of Glass here. I did read the entire series for the first time this year, but I just finished up Queen of Shadows and am still spinning. If you haven’t read the Throne of Glass series, you should. Drop everything and just read. I won’t discuss much about this book since I am going to post a review later this week. Just know that it is awesome!

So there they are, my 10 favorite of 2015 (so far)! What books did you love this year? Please share them with me!

    1. I need to pick up Chapelwood. I am a little worried, though. It takes Lizzie out of her hometown and away from the real historical events that made me interested in the first book. But, I love Cherie Priest so much, I will read it.

    1. The first two aren’t as good as the rest of the series, but they do establish important things. He wrote them like 4 years before the rest of series and you can tell. The series really picks up with the 3rd one!

  1. Awesome list! I adored Uprooted too! I could gush about it all day long! Ready Player One is a book club pick for this month for me too, so I’m really looking forward to it. And I so have to finish the Daughter of Smoke & Bone series! I love, love, love the first book but still haven’t read the others – I think I’m a little afraid they won’t live up to my expectations. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I absolutely adore Naomi Novik and Jim Butcher! Have you read “The Wrath and the Dawn”? I keep seeing it pop up everywhere (and like “Cinder” was for you, it’s one that Goodreads keeps throwing at me), so I might start it soon. Great list!!

    1. I have read it. It was okay. I was expecting more out of it than I got, but I gave it a solid 3 stars on Goodreads and will absolutely read the sequel. If you read it, let me know, so we can compare notes. 😀
